Neuromuscular stimulation devices, also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NEMS), and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) are therapeutic modalities used by physical therapists that transmit an electrical impulse which causes a stimulus to motor and/or sensory nerves though gel pads placed on the skin over an area of the body.
NEMS electrical impulses cause the stimulation (depolorization) of nerves that communicate to muscles causing them to contract. This type of electrical stimulation is used to retrain muscles.
Other therapeutic units, such as a TENS device, are used for pain control by stimulating smaller sensory nerves that can block the pain from reaching higher centers in the nervous system.
